About the play
Written by Fabrizio Dettamanti, Renzo e Lucia spusàs o spusàs mia is a comic parody of The Betrothed.
The story follows the well-known adventures of Renzo and Lucia while introducing unexpected twists, comic misunderstandings and unforgettable characters. Don Rodrigo becomes more ridiculous than threatening, Lucia's kidnapping turns into a sequence of hilarious mishaps, and many of Manzoni's most famous scenes are transformed into moments of laughter and entertainment.
The performance also features well-known songs with rewritten lyrics in the Bergamasque dialect, creating a lively musical experience that makes this production unique.
The theatre company
The Il Teatro del Gioppino Theatre Company from Zanica is one of the leading dialect theatre companies in the Bergamo area.
Founded in 1998 with the premiere of this very production, the company has spent decades preserving Bergamasque theatrical traditions through original musical comedies inspired by the region's language and culture. Its name honours Gioppino, the iconic mask of Bergamasque popular theatre.
An evening celebrating local traditions
This performance marks the conclusion of the Ducato di Piazza Pontida's dialect theatre programme.
Through humour, music and the Bergamasque language, the show offers audiences a fresh and entertaining way to rediscover one of Italy's greatest literary classics while celebrating the cultural identity of the local community.
