Borsì I - III Duke of Piazza Pontida

Giovanni Azzola da March 1947

Giovanni Azzola (1875–1952), a merchant by profession, stood out for his dignified and affable character, even though he was not a writer like his predecessors. His personality is vividly described in a passage from Ubaldo Riva’s “memoir”:

"His appearance and manner of presenting himself bore a mark of 'representativeness' that honored both the Ducate and the Duke; rarely — in these times of flamboyance or careless ease — does one encounter personalities like Giovanni Azzola, so full of affability and distinction."

This temperament, combined with a clear spirit of patronage — playfully hinted at by the title he assumed, “Borsì” — proved particularly valuable during a period of rapprochement and consolidation within the Ducate.
